As the first Sainsbury's
Coffee Shop to go Fairtrade, the Preston Fairtrade Steering Group
was invited to sample the coffee at the newly refurbished unit by
store manager Julia Blackett and regional business development manager,
Sascha Rawlinson, responsible for hot drinks in the coffee shops nationwide.
The steering group heard of the exciting plans to roll out Fairtrade
nationwide by Fairtrade Fortnight 2007. All coffee and hot chocolate
served in the Preston Coffee Shop is now Fairtrade, with tea, sugar
and snacks to follow. This is a tremendous step and the Steering Group
are very proud to be associated with this initiative.
Following the discussions with the Sainsbury's team and enjoying a
delicious coffee and Fairtrade nibbles, the group proceeded to hold
their September meeting in the coffee shop.

Steering Group-meeting in progress

The third annual Carey Challenge
Cup churches five-a-side competition (at Preston College) was the first
to be played with only Fairtrade Footballs. Everton manager David Moyes
was the guest of honour. David gave
an interview about his life in football and his Christian faith and
presented the prizes. Preston City Church won the overall competition
and one of their players, Michael Hindle, was judged the tournament's
best player by David. Michael was presented with a signed Fairtrade
football. Other signed Fairtrade footballs were raffled off in aid of
the Christian Sport's chaplaincy organisation SCORE, and everyone was
given free Fairtrade
chocolate footballs during the interval.

declared a Fairtrade City
On Thursday
24 June 2004 Councillor Pat Woods declared Preston a
Fairtrade City at her inauguration as new mayor of Preston.
This is particularly apt as Pat has been a constant
support to the Preston & South Ribble Group since
its inception.
